Longfellow School apartments win $1.8M in state historic tax credits

The redevelopment of a former school property near the Gem City Market has been awarded $1.84 million in state historic tax credits, the state and the project developer have announced.


With a total project cost of $30.2 million, the redevelopment of the former school at 245 Salem Ave., in Dayton’s Grafton Hill neighborhood, will see the school complex rehabilitated into 54 senior apartments, the Ohio Department of Development said.

The adaptive reuse of a former Dayton school received a boost Tuesday with the award of an Ohio Historic Preservation Tax Credit.

The $1.8 million tax credit will go toward the Longfellow School project — a proposed $35 million redevelopment of 245 Salem Ave. in Dayton's Grafton Hill neighborhood. Constructed in the 1880s and vacant since 2017, the former school complex is planned for rehabilitation as a senior living facility, a performing arts center and an "aquafarm."

Historic school on Salem Avenue planned for redevelopment

Dayton’s school board will approve the sale of 10 former school sites next Tuesday — nine vacant lots plus the historic Longfellow school at 245 Salem Avenue, which will become a redevelopment project.

After the tornadoes, the developers added a safe room that consists of extra steel reinforcement in the frame of one of the interior rooms, he said. G.F. Bailey learned about the "safe room" at a county-sponsored event following the tornadoes.

Tornado-resistant homes built in Trotwood

TROTWOOD, Ohio (WKEF/WRGT) -- A city ravaged by the Memorial Day tornadoes in 2019 is taking another stride toward recovery. Trotwood Mayor Mary McDonald says four new homes are being built in the city's Sycamore Woods neighborhood. They will be designed to withstand tornado-force winds.
